The impressive power of a Porsche engine isn’t deafening to bystanders because the muffler, also known as the silencer, reduces the noise by up to 25 decibels. You’ll notice how much of a significant difference this makes to the noise if your silencer ever malfunctions. Here are six ways to tell that your silencer may need to be repaired or replaced soon at Porsche Warwick.

Does Your Porsche Need a New Muffler_Porsche Warwick

Increased Engine Noise

Silencers use cleverly organized perforated tubes and chambers with sound waves moving in opposite directions to muffle the noise emitting from the engine. If your silencer ever develops a crack or loosened gasket, this muffling effect will be lost, and your engine noise will become many decibels louder.

You’ll need to have it fixed promptly because the maximum legal engine noise in Rhode Island is 86 decibels in speed zones of under 35 miles per hour and 90 decibels in higher speed zones. An average Porsche engine without a good silencer produces many more decibels than this maximum limit.

Smellier Exhaust Fumes

Most of the toxic emissions are removed from your exhaust fumes by the catalytic converter. But the silencer helps to make the fumes even cleaner before they make it into the atmosphere. So if your silencer runs into trouble, you may notice smellier exhaust fumes than usual.

Excessive Rust

The heat running through your car’s exhaust creates condensation, which travels along the exhaust pipes and drips out of the silencer. All this water naturally causes rust, which is one of the most common killers of silencers. If your silencer seems to be excessively rusted, you might need a new one.

Lessened Engine Power

When silencers clog up, the airflow through your entire exhaust system becomes restricted. This backup of gases prevents fresh air from entering the engine, which starves the combustion chambers of oxygen. The result is a drop in engine power.

Misfiring Engine

If a clogged silencer causes a lack of oxygen in the combustion chambers, the fuel won’t be igniting properly. This misfiring leads to a buildup of unburned fuel and carbon deposits, which can rapidly foul the spark plugs and worsen the misfiring.

Falling Gas Mileage

As a result of misfiring, your engine will no longer be burning fuel as efficiently. You’ll soon find yourself stopping for gas more frequently.

How Often Silencers Need Replacing at a Porsche Dealership

Silencers tend to last between 40,000 and 80,000 miles, which is about three to six years for the average driver. You can extend the lifespan of your silencer with regular undercarriage cleaning and checking for cracks and rust damage.
