Does Your Porsche Need a New Oil Filter?

The oil filter in your Porsche removes contaminants from the oil to enable proper engine lubrication. The filter should be replaced when changing your oil, typically every 7,500 to 10,000 miles or as per your owner’s manual. However, you may need to replace it sooner if it clogs or starts to leak. So watch out for signs you need an oil change and new filter from your Porsche dealer.

Does Your Porsche Need a New Oil Filter?

Reduced Oil Pressure

After months of use, the filter becomes clogged with contaminants, which restricts oil flow through your Porsche’s engine. This causes a drop in oil pressure, forcing the pump to work harder to push oil through the system. Reduced pressure means there is less oil to lubricate and cool the engine components. You should replace the filter to restore proper oil flow through the system.

Dark or Thick Oil

An old filter allows more contaminants to recirculate through the engine and gradually degrade the oil. You may notice the oil darkening on the dipstick sooner than your scheduled service. The oil may also look thick and sludgy, which is a sign that it has lost its lubrication properties. A new filter is needed to trap the contaminants and prevent oil contamination.

Overheating Engine

A clogged filter prevents oil from flowing through the engine and removing excess heat. This leads to increased friction due to metal-on-metal contact between the components. Friction can cause localized overheating in some components, which can cause your check engine light to come on. If you don’t replace the filter promptly, the excess heat will damage the seals, gaskets, and metal parts.

Clanking or Grinding Sounds

Using an old filter in your Porsche can lead to unusual clanking and grinding sounds under the hood. The filter allows contaminants to degrade the oil and lower its lubrication abilities. If the oil is unable to lubricate the engine properly, the metal parts will grind against each other, leading to metallic sounds. Replace the worn filter and change the oil to achieve quiet performance.

Dirty Exhaust Fumes

As your Porsche’s filter gets clogged, it fails to capture all the contaminants and allows them to make their way into the engine. Some of the oil may also end up past the pistons and in the combustion chamber. The burned oil and blow-by gases are emitted as black exhaust fumes.

Poor Engine Performance

Eventually, a blocked filter degrades motor oil to the point where your Porsche lacks adequate lubrication. The added strain causes poor acceleration and bad fuel economy.
Although the filter for your engine oil is a small component, it can affect your Porsche’s performance. If you haven’t replaced the filter in a while, contact Porsche Warwick to schedule a service.
