Sunlight, rain, and other weather conditions all take a turn trying to wear down your paint. Sand, grit, salt, and mud can all cling to the paint and scratch or blemish it. Finally, cars are inevitably the target of bird droppings, fruit, and anything falling from the sky. As your Porsche dealer, we’d like to give you a few tips on how to keep your car paint in great condition.

How to Protect the Car Paint on Your Porsche

Wash Your Car Regularly

Regular washing is one of the most effective ways to keep your paint in good condition. A thorough wash will remove any debris on the paint, and your car will gleam in the sun. There are several options available for washing a car, but the two most common are washing it yourself or visiting a car wash. There are benefits to both options, although washing the car yourself is usually the most satisfying and safest choice.

When you wash your car yourself, you’re aware of the cleaning chemicals used and can make sure that they won’t damage the paint. Some cleaning products can be harsh if applied and this can damage your car’s clearcoat protection layer. Our service department is always happy to advise on the safest chemicals to ensure your paint gleams and is protected against damage.

Wax Increases Protection

Your car’s paint job is the product of multiple layers of different types of paint. The bare metal is painted with a base coat, which protects against rust and provides a foundation for applying layers of color paint. Once the color paint has been applied, a clear coat is applied to protect the layers of color. When you wax your car, you add an extra layer of wax between the clearcoat and the environment.

It’s advisable to wax your car at least two times a year, in the spring and just before winter. Wax has a secondary benefit of increasing your car’s fuel efficiency. Dirt and grime provide resistance when you drive, and this increases fuel usage. Tests have shown that a clean and waxed car can achieve anything up to an additional 2MPG.

Use a Car Cover

A car cover is a very easy and efficient way to protect your car. It’s especially beneficial if you often park on your drive or anywhere outside for extended periods. A cover protects against sunlight, bird droppings, and anything else that could damage your paint.

A cover is also useful if you park your car in your garage, as it will protect against micro scratches caused by dust in the air settling on your car.
