Your six-cylinder engine is one of the reasons you fell in love with your Porsche. Its sound is distinctive and unforgettable, and it signals a controlled power that longs to be free. This engine is highly efficient, but to function to the best of its ability it requires an air filter. To ensure that your Porsche always works to its full potential, these are some of the signs you need a new car air filter from your Porsche dealer.

Reduced Fuel Economy

The air filter’s job is to filter dust and dirt from the air that enters through your radiator. Your engine requires a huge amount of clean fresh air for combustion to take place. When you step on the gas, fuel enters the combustion chamber and mixes with the air. The spark plugs generate a spark and cause a controlled explosion in the chamber that allows our Porsche to move.

If your air filter is dirty, it blocks the airflow and reduces the amount of air in the combustion chamber. With less air in the chamber, the excess fuel won’t combust and this wasted fuel is forced out of the exhaust. It might not be obvious immediately, but you’ll notice the reduced fuel economy when you have to make more frequent trips to the gas station.

Strange Engine Noises

A bad air filter can reduce the pleasant sound of your six-cylinder engine to a choking and coughing sound. These odd sounds are caused by a poor fuel-to-air ratio in your engine. The lack of clean air due to a clogged filter not only costs more in gas but also stifles your engine. Just as you cough when you need to clear your lungs, the strange sounds are a sign that your engine needs more clean air.

A side effect of the excess fuel in the combustion chamber is damage to your spark plugs. The unburnt fuel coats them in a sticky black residue, which damages the plugs and prevents them from firing efficiently.

Dirty Air Filter

A new air filter is white or cream, but as it filters the air it will fill with dirt. The dirt will build up in the filter and block it, thus preventing fresh clean air from reaching your engine. The condition of the filter is easy to check, and you can find the location of the air filter box by checking your car manual. If you open the box you’ll be able to physically see the condition of the filter.

As part of your service schedule, our technicians check and replace the filter regularly. If you are overdue for a service, the air filter may be worn and clogged with debris.
