The transmission is the heart of the vehicle, which means that if it’s not maintained correctly, your engine will be working too hard, and you’ll have a higher risk of breaking down on the side of the road. Read on to know what your Porsche mechanic does to your car during a routine transmission service at your dealer in Warwick, RI.

What Happens During A Routine Transmission Service

A Leak-Down Test Is Performed

The mechanic performs a leak-down test to determine how well your vehicle’s internal components are sealed against air pressure leaks. A low reading indicates trouble in the form of cracked, loose, or improperly installed valves and rings, worn piston rings, or leaking wheel seals.

A Visual Inspection Is Performed

Next, your mechanic inspects the exterior of your vehicle to check for leaks, fluid contamination, and abnormal noises. These irregularities could indicate a problem with the transmission’s external components. The technician also performs a visual inspection of the interior, including checking out all fittings and gaskets for any damage.

The Transmission Fluid Level Is Checked

Once your mechanic has seen all that needs to be seen, it’s time to check the transmission fluid level and condition. A good number of contaminants can be found in the fluid after a few years of use, so your Porsche tech will recommend a complete flush of the system if necessary. A transmission fluid flush will help keep the transmission in good shape if done regularly.

A Transmission Filter Change Is Performed

The technician will change the transmission filter if necessary during a routine service.  The filter is considered ordinary if the fluid was changed and there are no external issues or leaks. A clogged transmission filter can cause various problems, including low shifting and slipping, so this replacement is integral to maintaining your vehicle’s transmission.

Lubrication Is Applied as Needed

Your Porsche tech lubricates all fittings and gaskets as needed. The joints of any external components are also lubricated, so they don’t seize up over time, especially when the transmission fluid is replaced every 30,000 miles or more frequently if conditions warrant it.

A Transmission Fluid Analysis Is Performed

To obtain a complete picture of the health of your transmission, your Porsche dealer will perform a fluid analysis in addition to the other steps in a routine service. The technician draws and tests your vehicle’s transmission fluid and, based on results, decides how frequently future flushes should be performed.

The Transmission Pan Is Cleaned

Another important reason to have the transmission checked is to clean the transmission pan. The contaminants will all settle in the pan over time, and draining and refilling the fluid will not altogether remove them. When the pan is cleaned, whatever remains in the system is removed to ensure that the transmission is entirely free of dirt or pollutants.
